Good news for iOS jailbreakers eagerly anticipating @pod2g’s untether to be released. The infamous iPhone Dev Team has just updated their redsn0w and Pwnage tools to jailbreak iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad 1 untethered on iOS 5.0.1, and is available for download. The updated redsn0w 0.9.10b1 for both Windows and Mac OS X can perform untethered jailbreak on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G and iPod Touch 3G (all A4 devices) running iOS 5.0.1 (iOS 5.0 not supported). Details after the break.

@pod2g handed over his untether exploit to both the Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team for final release, and just now, both teams have incorporated the same exploit in the said tools. The Chronic Dev Team has released an untether package over at Cydia for previously-jailbroken devices.

The list of supported devices includes:

iPhone 4 (GSM & CDMA)

iPhone 3GS

iPad 1

iPod Touch 3G

iPod Touch 4G

If you have any of these A4 devices, you can get untethered jalbreak on iOS 5.0.1 through redsn0w or Pwnage tool, both on Windows and Mac OS X.

Requirements

You must already be running iOS 5.0.1 on your iDevice, as iOS 5.0 is not supported. If you are still on 5.0, update immediately, as the iPSW signing window for 5.0.1 is still open and might cause a problem for you afterwards

Caution: Ultrasn0w and Gevey SIM unlockers, don’t upgrade through iTunes. You need a custom firmware that will preserve your baseband. You can use redsn0w and Pwnage tool both to create such a custom IPSW.

It is advised to back up all your data with iTunes or iCloud before you proceed.

Instructions (Redsn0w Only):

1. Download redsn0w 0.9.10b1 for your operating system here (Windows, Mac OS X)
2. Plug in your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running iOS 5.0.1 to your computer.through USB cable. Make sure iTunes is not running before proceeding, and launch redsn0w.

3. Click on the jailbreak button. You will get a warning for making sure that your iDevice is both off and plugged in before it can be put into DFU mode for upgrade.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions for putting your device in DFU mode. As soon as it is detected, redsn0w will automatically identify your device and running iOS version.

5. Once the device is identified, redsn0w will start preparing the jailbreak data and performing the relevant operations. Sit tight.

6. When redsn0w is done working, you will get a dialog for selecting jailbreak options. Just checkInstall Cydia and proceed.

7. The patched ramdisk will be uploaded to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, and redsn0w interface will get you a final page for donating to @pod2g, the developer of the untether.

The rest of the jailbreak process takes place on your device’s screen, which you can see as it happens.

These days Untethered Jailbreak is a very hot topic and every one is after the Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone 4, iPod 4, iPod 3, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S, iPad 1 and iPad 2. Those who got A4 chipped iDevices and lower are always on safe side. Rather than people owning A5 iDevices are not yet with any luck. People owning A4 chipped and lower iDevices are on safe side because these iDevices have been PWNED for life and can be Jailbroken Tethered on any firmware. Where as, people on A5 iDevices are not with any luck so far because Apple has equipped a whole new processor and made it little bit difficult to Exploit the Hardware.

It doesn’t matters, how hard Apple tries to put people away from the Jailbreak, every time with the release of new iOS update, there is a bug which leads to Jailbreak and starts the cat & mouse game. Now, with the release of iOS 5.0, there was a bug found by Charlie Miller, which could lead to iOS 5.0 Untethered Jailbreak. Unfortunately; Apple patched the bug in its new update of iOS 5.0.1. After the update of iOS 5.0.1 people started to loose hope in the hackers and some of them updated to iOS 5.0.1 to fix the battery drain issues. But, those who updated to iOS 5.0.1 are still facing the issues. So Apple is seeing the issues once again in its new update of iOS 5.1.

The iOS 5.1 Beta 1 was released few weeks back for Developers only. So the new Beta might be around the corner. Before Apple released iOS 5.1, @Pod2g luckily found a new bug in iOS 5.0 which leads to an Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4, iPod 4, iPod 3 and iPhone 3GS. He demoed a video few days back showing the Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.0 on iPod 3. At the time he demoed the video about the Untethered Jailbreak, he was not sure if the exploit would work on iPhone 4 or not.

So today @Pod2g confirmed that it is safe to update to iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone 4 because the bug he had found earlier is also working fine on iPhone 4.

Got an untethered iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1. Feel free to update.

After hearing this news, every one must be damn excited and willing to update. So before you plan to update to iOS 5.0.1 make sure that you are not doing it via iTunes. If you do it via iTunes, you will be locked on iOS 5.0.1 because iOS 5.0 got a new baseband which is not yet unlockable. This warning is for those who rely on an Unlock. If you rely on an Unlock, So you follow the guide from here and preserve your old baseband and update on iOS 5.0.1.

Those who are never locked (Factory Unlocked) can update to iOS 5.0.1 by any means. They can update via iTunes or custom.

Don’t forget to save your iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs by iFaith using this guide.

Front man for the Chronic Dev Team, Joshua Hill (also known as p0sixninja), has announced a landmark number of crash reports that have already been submitted to his team. The Chronic Dev Team recently released an app that collects iOS crash reports in iTunes and sends them to the team’s private servers to help find exploits for the future iOS 5 untethered jailbreak.

After only one week, the team of hackers has collected over 10 million crash reports from jailbreak supporters worldwide. Joshua and the rest of the Chronic Dev Team are working to parse the crash report data to help create a stable untethered jailbreak for Apple’s iOS 5.

In a recent tweet, Joshua Hill announced that 10,071,868 crash reports have been uploaded to the Chronic Dev Team’s servers since the tool for collecting the data was released last Sunday.

The Chronic Dev Team is using Google’s MapReduce software to compute the massive amount of report data that is being sent in by jailbreakers around the world. According to Joshua, MapReduce allows his team to “run tests that would take days normally in only seconds.”

There’s still no ETA on an official untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, but this incredible number of submitted crash reports is a testament to how committed the jailbreak community is to making the Chronic Dev Team’s jailbreak a reality. The team’s hackers have already found important iOS 5 exploits, but Joshua has said that they remain “highly guarded until the right time.”

Thousands of people especially Apple users are asking on Facebook and Twitter pages and over blogs and forums about iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, iPad and iPad 2 and when will it release as they really can’t hardly wait for the jailbreak. We will indicate the status of iOS 5 untethered jailbreak in detail after the jump.

Previous week we showed you a report about the security researcher Charlie Miller who discovered a security flaw in iOS firmware that will be used specially to make the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak on iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, iPad 2 and iPad.

This exploit has been discovered in the software which means that it can be easly fixed in iOS update so that the well-known iPhone hacker Pod2g warned people from updating to iOS 5.0.1 as it may carry a fix for the founded exploit. So far we don’t know if Apple fixed the security flow or not on iOS 5.0.1 update.

Note: If you are using iOS 5 stay away from iOS 5.0.1 update or iOS 5.0.2 which confirmed to be released next week. If you are running iOS 5.0.1, there is nothing to do, and we hope that iOS 5.0.1 still exploitable but stay away from iOS 5.0.2 until we have a confirmation from hackers.

Till now there is no definite release date for any untethered jailbreak. And we don’t expect that anyone of the hacker may give any dates before iOS 5.0.2 public release. So stay tuned with us and we will cover you with any news as soon as they released.

After seven betas, one GM and another performance improving update (which itself has two betas), iOS 5 hasn’t received an untethered jailbreak yet. Folks who wish to enhance their experience with apps and tweaks from Cydia have to make do with a tethered jailbreak, but it appears that the jailbreaking community is getting closer and closer to an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 as one hacker has sent out an update regarding its progress.

The update on iOS 5 untethered jailbreak comes from pod2g – iPhone hacker, discoverer of exploits and member of Chronic Dev Team – in the form of a tweet from his Twitter account in which he states that he has found a bug that can untether iOS 5.

From pod2g:

Hey jailbreaking friends, I’ve found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don’t expect a release soon, but I’m gonna work hard in it.

No details have been given regarding the bug, but, perhaps, it is a userland exploit like the five userland exploits which were announced by p0sixninja at this year’s MyGreatFest. These userland exploits – unlike bootrom exploits – are software-based and, hence, would be available for all iOS devices, including iPhone 4S and iPad 2 (as was shown by MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team), on the version of iOS which has the userland exploit.

The last userland exploit-based jailbreak was comex’s JailbreakMe which was based on a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari on iOS 4.3.3. The main disadvantage of a userland exploit is that it can be easily patched with a software update whereas bootrom exploits cannot be patched unless hardware is revised.

Current iOS 5 jailbreak is tethered-boot only, meaning you’ll have to connect your device to your computer every time you need to restart it. If you’ve got a supported iOS 5 device, you can jailbreak it using Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze.

Tethered jailbreak is not very pleasant but there is a bit of a solution: SemiTether package from Cydia allows you to reboot your device with limited functionality so that your phone doesn’t become a total brick when you’re out of juice. You can follow our guide to jailbreak semi-tethered on iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.

Coming back to today’s update: pod2g hasn’t given any ETA but has promised to work hard on it to get it out as soon as possible.
