One of the first things bloggers do when they attend an event where a new smartphone is announced is compare said smartphone’s performance against others, more established names in the smartphone industry. Our friends over at SlashGear did exactly this at yesterday’s Nokia World, where Nokia announced its first Windows Phone 7-based smartphone called the Lumia 800, comparing its browser performance against the iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S II.

SlashGear separately compares the browser performance of the Lumia 800 against the iPhone 4S and the Galaxy S II. The performance tests aren’t exactly scientific as they did not take place in a controlled environment. The two tests are, then, anecdotal and we suggest you do not jump to a conclusion based on them.

Unsurprisingly, thanks to its tight hardware and software optimization, the iPhone 4S was found to be the fastest in the browser comparison. Mobile Safari appears to be making full use of the dual-core Apple A5 chip which, by the way, has been proved to be the fastest in its class.

Apple apparently uses a couple of clever tricks such as filling URL bar before loading the page to make the user think that the browser is rendering faster. The spinning circle in the iOS status bar is what you should actually look at to ascertain if the web page has loaded or not. Still, despite all the apparent trickery, the iPhone 4S did load pages the quickest!

The Galaxy S II, which is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz chip, came in at a respectable 2nd place in the test. The biggest advantage it has over the Lumia 800 and iPhone 4S is that it comes with support for Flash so you can, as Adobe would say, browse the “full web” with it.

Despite having one less core and half the RAM, the Nokia Lumia 800 held up surprisingly well against giants like the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II in the comparison tests. It was certainly the slowest of the bunch, but only by a second or two.

SlashGear found that all page navigation was “smooth across the board” once the page loaded up. As we mentioned before, browser speed doesn’t just depend on rendering, but also on network speed/load, so please do not consider this to be a conclusive test.

The Nokia Lumia 800 was announced yesterday at Nokia World.

Despite the ongoing legal battles going on around the world between Apple and Samsung, it seems that the firm from Cupertino has decided to stick with the Korean electronics giant for the production of its upcoming A6 chip.

According to Korea Times’ informers, the chip will be manufactured in Samsung’s plant in Texas…

“Apple has been in talks with Samsung over shipment of its A6 quad-core mobile processor (AP) chips to be used in the next iPhone. It appears that Apple clearly has concluded that Samsung remains a critical business partner,” an executive from an Apple parts supplier based in Korea said on condition of anonymity. He said that Samsung has been increasing the output of the Apple-designed A6 chips in its manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas.

This will help warm up relationships between the 2 companies? Probably not, but we can always hope so.

Samsung’s answer to Apple’s iMessage and Blackberry’s popular BBM instant messaging service – ChatON – has arrived for Android.

We first talked about ChatON back in August when Samsung announced the app. The most attractive feature of ChatON that is being focused on in its marketing is its compatibility with a variety of smartphone platforms. Although it is currently only available on Android, it is expected to be launched on iOS, Blackberry OS and Samsung’s own Bada OS in the near future.

ChatON is a free service that lets you chat one-to-one or in groups. You can not only send/receive text messages but also broadcasts, little animations, pictures, videos, audio, location and - this is where it differentiates itself - info, contacts and calendar. For groups chats, there is also a handy Trunk feature which lets you see all sent images/video in each group chat room.

From Android Market:

Chat your way, with ChatON! ChatON is a global mobile communication service that enables you to have better relationships with your buddies and groups of buddies.
ChatON brings together all of these methods of communication, expression, and sharing in one place.

We’ve personally tested the app on our Samsung Galaxy S II unit and can confirm that it works as advertised. If ChatOn, well, catchesON then it is something that we can easily see replacing iMessage and BBM because of its compatibility with multiple smartphone platforms.

ChatON’s greatest competitor isn’t iMessage or BBM, though. WhatsApp actually has more platforms covered than ChatON: iOS, Blackberry, Android, Symbian and Windows Phone. Getting users to shift to ChatON from WhatsApp, then, will not be easy since it is quite established. Still, ChatON has Samsung behind it, so the company can give it a big boost by including the app on every smartphone they release.

We’ll inform our dear readers of ChatON’s iOS app as soon as it is released. Until then, this writer is sticking to WhatsApp for his multi-platform, instant messaging needs.

If you’re interested, ChatON can be downloaded for free from the link embedded below. It is compatible with all Android smartphones running 2.2 Froyo or above. Do let us know what you think of it in our comments section on Facebook.

A video of Google’s up-and-coming Nexus Prime handset has been leaked online ahead of its official unveiling next week at Samsung’s Unpacked Event (October 11).

The leak comes via BGR, which reports ‘Google’s upcoming flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, has leaked out in video form courtesy of Gadget.ro – and it’s almost a minute and half of pure Google.’

We’ve covered the Nexus Prime leaks quite extensively during the last few weeks – and there’s been quite a few. According to the most recent reports, the spec of the Nexus Prime is set to be extremely impressive.

We’re talking a Super AMOLED HD display (720p resolution), 1.2 or 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. All of which means that the Google Nexus Prime, once released, could very well be the world’s most powerful smartphone.

We could go on for hours about this device, but now there’s a video we’ll just shut up and let you enjoy 90 seconds of Android-based technology porn.

Enjoy:

With the dust barely settles after Apple announced the new iPhone, or iPhone 4S as it’s known to its friends, the Android world is getting ready to take its moment in the spotlight.

Samsung, manufacturers of Google’s last reference handset and all-round Android fanboys, has released a video of what we can only assume is their latest collaboration with the search giant – and they seem rather excited by it.

The video doesn’t really show us much at all, but there is a glimpse of what appears to be one side of the new device, complete with power button and a 3-pin dock connector of sorts. Is this the next Nexus phone, with Samsung once again being the company Google has tasked with showing Android off in all its glory.

And glory, it shall be. The upcoming Nexus, believed to be going by the Transformers-tastic name of Nexus Prime, is widely expected to be the first phone to launch with Google’s new Android release, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Ice Cream Sandwich as it is becoming known, is the first amalgamation of the smartphone-based Gingerbread OS, and the tablet-based Honeycomb, and is believed to borrow heavily from the latter in the user interface department. Many pundits think that Ice Cream Sandwich could be the beginning of Android’s move to a more user-friendly user interface, with some of Android’s telltale harshness being pushed to the wayside.

The video says that we at least won’t have long to wait before the mystery is over, with Samsung supposedly showing off the handset on October 11th. Just when we think we can stop counting down the days to a smartphone announcement, Samsung goes and resets the clock!

Google’s Nexus phones, or at least the two of them that have already been released, are the company’s way of showing the world what a stock Android device should be like, as well as allowing them to give partners a reference hardware standard. Both the Nexus One and Nexus S have been well received, especially by those wishing to own an Android device without one of the many overlays that hardware manufacturers seem so keen on adding. All Nexus phones come free of such clutter, and hardcore Android fans prefer the vanilla Google approach when it comes to their smartphones.

We’ll have more on the Nexus Prime as and when Samsung shares it with us.

Samsung and Apple are fighting fiercely, Apple banned Samsung galaxy tablet in Europe, Samsung is going to banned iPhone 5 in We saw this image posted to Reddit after seeing it linked on Daring Fireball, and it was just too good not to share. Below you’ll see a very long image that shows how extensively Samsung has copied Apple in its products, packaging, presentation, marketing, and even app interfaces. Any one of these things by itself you might be able to pass off as coincidence or with the “there’s only so many ways to skin a tablet” argument, but when they’re put all together like this it’s pretty unmistakable how extensively and shamelessly Samsung is aping Apple.

Argue the merits of Apple’s “look and feel” lawsuit against Samsung all you like, but other than wagging our fingers at Samsung, this gets a well-deserved “No Comment.”
