The past several hours have been quite hectic in the jailbreak community, with an announcement of a new crash reporter tool to help the Chronic Dev Team develop an untether for iOS 5, and the Dev Team’s Musclenerd announcing that an unlock for the iPhone 4S is in the works.

Now, there is even more to be excited about, as a new group, the Pwn Dev Team, has released their own jailbreak tool by the name of Ac1dSn0w. This tool is not affiliated with any of the current tools like Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze, but performs essentially the same function as Redsn0w. All that differes right now is a different interface, much simpler than that of Redsn0w (mostly because it lacks some functions). Note that this is not a tethered jailbreak, and is merely an alternate tool for performing the same function as Redsn0w.

To jailbreak with this tool follow the directions below.

NOTE: This jailbreak is NOT compatible with the iPhone 4S or iPad 2. The jailbreak is identical to the one provided by Redsn0w.

DOWNLOAD (Mac only)

1. Connect your device to your computer and turn it off.

2. Put your device in DFU mode. If you cannot remember how, check “Show Assistant” for on-screen directions.

3. Click “Jailbreak” and wait for the process to complete. If you want more info on what the program is doing, just check “Show Console”.

4. Once done, put your device in DFU mode again and click “Tethered Boot”.

Thats it! Keep in mind that this is still a beta release, and still may be unstable. We recommend holding off on this tool, especially since it doesn’t offer anything in addition to Redsn0w. You can check out the Pwn Dev Team’s post on Ac1dSn0w here.

As we reported earlier today, the Chronic Dev Team was gearing up for a big announcement, and there was some pretty big hype on Twitter. Sadly it was revealed a couple hours ago that the announcement was not the untethered jailbrek that many were hoping for. However, p0sixninja has finally made the post over at Greenpois0n.com, and there is news to be excited about.

This new tool comes with a whole lot more info on the progress of the iOS 5 jailbreak, namely that Apple has patched a few critical exploits that were announced at JailbreakCon earlier this year. As such, the Cronic Dev Team has released a tool that sends all crash reports from your device to them, a process which will make it much easier for the to find exploits. These crash reports are the main way that Apple finds and patches exploits before they are used in a jailbreak, and the vast amount of information that will be sent to Chronic Dev will no doubt be a big help. To participate, head on over to Greenpois0n.com and check out the most recent post, and follow all the directions on how to set the system up.

Steps

1. Download Mac | Pc (coming soon)

2. Plug in Device

3. Click “Do it!”

Last weekend, BigBoss had released a new package on Cydia called SemiTether, which allowed users to reboot their tethered jailbroken iOS 5 device without the need to connect it to the computer.

However, BigBoss’s solution had some limitations and number of users reported issues after using it. BigBoss has released a new version of SemiTether (v0.91), which incorporates the new mobile substrate by Jay Freeman a.k.a saurik that should make the semi tethered mode more stable.

BigBoss writes:

v0.9.1 incorporates Saurik’s new mobile substrate. Thanks to Saurik, we are entirely rid of all the daemon patching – this means there’s no more daemon patching or restarting. Most the semi-tether work is now done by mobile substrate. The semitether package from the repository now protects your iOS 5 notification center plugins and gives you the option to patch mobile safari so that it will work on the non-jailbreak reboot mode. I’m still looking into patching mail, if possible.

Here’s the list of changes in the updated version:

1) Much more stable with new mobile substrate2) Can patch safari so it works in the non-jailbreak reboot mode 3) App to monitor the status of your semitether and reapply. Check after cydia installs.

Semi tethered mode will allow users, especially iPhone users who want to jailbreak their iPhone to at least use it for some of the basic functionalities of the iPhone and now even get to use mobile Safari, instead of the tethered mode where if you reboot the iPhone for any reason it is stuck at the Apple logo, until you don’t tether it to the computer and use Redsn0w’s Just Boot option. Here’s a summary of what you can and cannot do in semi tethered mode with the latest update:

1) Can use phone, sms (text messages)

2) Can use every other stock app on iphone.

3) Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser

4) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.

5) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.

6) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.

However a word of caution from BigBoss:

This new version will definitely solve all the flakiness problems we had in the past. However, be aware that this is a total rewrite of mobile substrate. Until this appears in a community source, you are beta testing so installing it is entirely at your own risk.

If you still want to give it a shot then checkout our post on <a title="‘Semitethered’ Jailbreak For iOS 5 Released!

It appears that iPhone Dev team has posted the couple of evidence regarding the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreaks on iOS 5. Earlier today they have published few screenshots of iPhone 4S running Cydia and noted that the jailbreak is in very preliminary stage, MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team noted that jailbreak still requires a lot of work.
After publishing the pictures of iPhone 4S running a Cydia on iOS 5, it is reported that iPhone Dev Team also uploaded a video to their Youtube channel, demoing the iPad 2 running a Cydia on iOS 5. Similarly, to the iPhone 4S, the team also mentioned in the description that iPad 2 jailbreaks on iOS 5 is also in the preliminary stage and requires a lot of work to be done.

Currently, the iPad 2 can be only jailbreak through using the Web based jailbreak named JailbreakMe 3.0 by Comex. However, the iPad 2 jailbreak do not support the new iOS 5 firmware, and requires a complete new jailbreak for the new version.

What’s the next best thing to an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5? A Semitethered Jailbreak of course!

Just a few minutes ago BigBoss released Semitethered Jailbreak, a new Cydia package that lets you reboot your iOS 5 jailbroken iPhone at will while away from your computer!

It’s not without it’s caveats, but it’s a whole lot better than a normal tethered jailbreak. Details inside…

To use Semitethered Jailbreak, simply do the following:

Step 1: Tether Jailbreak your iOS 5 device with RedSn0w.

Step 2: Add http://thebigboss.org/semitether to your Cydia sources.

Step 3: Install SemiTether and reboot!

That’s it. Now you can reboot your iPhone, even away from your computer!

As mentioned, there are a few pluses and minuses though.

Phone will reboot to Home screen

Can use every stock app on iPhone except Mail and Safari until boot tether

Can’t use Cydia, or any jailbreak apps and tweaks until boot tether

Phone can take longer to boot

That’s a pretty good compromise, and sure beats having a looping apple logo if your phone happens to crash or reboot while away from the computer.

Let’s just call it really good jailbreak life insurance, shall we? Video coming shortly!

Have you used Semitethered Jailbreak yet? Are you excited?

Just a quick little heads up. MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-team has just announced on his Twitter the release of Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 for both Windows and Mac. But the question is what’s new on Redsn0w 0.9.9 b7 ?

MuscleNerd and iPhone Dev-team released Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 specially to improve the time of jailbreak process. Redsn0w 0.9.9 b7 reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (decreased by 60%). Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 still tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.

After some feedback on reddit, we’ve decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer “stashing” the applications by default during the redsn0w run. This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!). However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications. You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.

Thanks Dev-team for your continues improvement. But we do need iOS 5 untethered jailbreak.

Well, that was quick! Just hours after we received news of the Siri port for iPhone 4, we’ve learned that another Siri port, this time for the iPad 2, is also under development.

Siri was announced at Apple’s Let’s Talk iPhone event at the company’s own campus in Cupertino, California as one of iPhone 4S’ major new features. It is a personal assistant that allows you to perform a variety of tasks on your iPhone 4S – such as settings alarms/reminders/calendar events, texting/emailing/calling someone, asking for definitions, directions (and more) – using your voice alone.

The news comes straight from the developer Sonny Dickson in a tweet sent out from his Twitter account a few hours ago in which he announces Siri for iPad 2. The tweet includes a photo (which we’ve posted below) which shows Settings > General > Siri.

Earlier today, we talked about the Siri port for iPhone 4. Its initial build, which was talked about by 9to5Mac, had sluggish performance but an updated build with working GPU drivers showed a lot of promise. At the moment, Siri for iPhone 4 does not accept any input. Reason being that Apple servers do not accept Siri voice input to be processed if it is coming from any device except the iPhone 4S. While Dickson hasn’t explained the state of Siri for iPad 2 port, we believe it can’t take input either. There will, hopefully, be a workaround for this in the future.

Keep in mind, though, that jailbreak developer MuscleNerd has stated that porting Siri over to older, unsupported devices isn’t possible without resorting to piracy. I am not clear on how porting Siri to these devices would involve piracy, but these developers know what they are doing so we’ll have to take their word for it.

Since developers from the jailbreaking community have always been against piracy, hence they’ll probably not port Siri over to older devices until a suitable solution is found. This doesn’t mean others can’t try though, as Sonny Dickson (and Steve Troughton-Smith of Siri for iPhone 4 fame) has done exactly that:

We’ll keep our readers updated on all news regarding the whole Siri for older iOS devices matter. We do not know exactly when these ports will arrive (if they arrive at all) but we do know that they’ll require jailbroken iOS devices to work. If you haven’t done so, you should follow our guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5 final.

iOS 5 can already be jailbroken thanks to the iPhone Dev Team’s quick release of a new version of redsn0w (0.9.9b4). This is currently a tethered jailbreak, but an untether is in progress.

Redsn0w will work to jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 CDMA & GSM, iPod touch 3rd & 4th gen, and iPad 1. Not supported yet are iPhone 4S and iPad 2 devices, due to their use of the A5 CPU.

Before getting started, download iOS 5 and update your hardware, keep the IPSW around, but also be sure to have updated to iTunes 10.5.

Download redsn0w 0.9.9b4

You will need redsn0w 0.9.9b4 to get started, download it now for Mac (v 0.9.9b5 here) or for Windows (direct download links)

Jailbreaking iOS 5

Launch Redsn0w and choose the “Jailbreak” button

Connect the iOS device to the computer and turn the hardware off

Enter DFU mode by holding down the Sleep/Power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the Power button but continue to hold the Home button for another 15 seconds. You will get a notification from Redsn0w informing you of the device being in DFU mode

Point redsn0w to your iOS 5 IPSW file (older version)

Redsn0w will now perform the jailbreak, the newest version does not require you to have to point to any IPSW files because it downloads them directly from Apple

Choose “Install Cydia” and proceed with the jailbreak

Now you need to boot the iOS device tethered to get Cydia to load:

Open redsn0w again

Click on “Extras” and select the iOS 5 IPSW you downloaded in the previous step

Back at the Extras menu, click on the “Just Boot” option and follow the on screen instructions to boot into the jailbroken device

Your iOS device will automatically reboot as jailbroken, you can confirm this by looking for the Cydia icon on your springboard. As previously stated, this is a tethered jailbreak so you will need to connect your iPhone, iPad, or ipod touch to a computer and boot it with the assistance of Redsn0w if the battery dies or you shut it down for another reason. This is easy to do, just launch Redsn0w again and choose “Just Boot” again from the Extras menu.

A tethered jailbreak is already available for the new software, but it’s just not the same.

A tethered jailbreak is inconvenient, it means you have to reconnect your i Device to yourcomputer a fter every restart. Luckily it sounds like we won’t have to wait long for an untether to hit web, as i0n1c has confirmed it’s being handled…

If you don’t know i0n1c, you’re likely familiar with his work. The infamous hacker was responsible for the iOS 4.3.1, 4.3.2, and 4.3.3 untether. Earlier today, i0n1c told the Twitter world that the iOS 5 untether was “covered.”

“As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who :p”

Although he wouldn’t confirm it, i0n1c was likely referring to the Chronic Dev team, the group of hackers responsible for GreenPoisOn. The team recently announced that it’s found multiple exploits for the iPad 2 and the upcoming iPhone.

Regardless of who is working on it, an untether appears to be in the pipeline. And with developers pushing out updates to their jailbreak tweaks and utilities, things are starting to look good for early iOS 5 adopters. Stay tuned.
