Now that Redsn0w 0.9.9b9 has been released, there is no longer a need for a 5.0 IPSW in order to jailbreak or tethered boot your device. This is great news for those who carry the files around with them in case they need to reboot tethered away from home. Now all you need is Redsn0w and an internet connection, no need for the bulky IPSW file! Redsn0w 0.9.9b9 also adds a bunch of other features but we will stick to jailbreaking for this tutorial.

DOWNLOAD:
Redsn0w 0.9.9b9 - Win
Redsn0w 0.9.9b9 - OSX

Step 1: After downloading Redsn0w open it up and hit “Jailbreak”

Step 2: On the next screen, you will be instructed to shut off your device and prepare to put it into DFU mode. If you already know how to do the DFU process you can just enter DFU mode before hitting next. Otherwise, turn your device off, hit next and follow the on-screen instructions for putting your device in DFU mode.

Step 3: After Redsn0w detects your device you don’t need to do anything else, it will automatically detect what model you have, download the appropriate files needed for jailbreaking and exploit your device all automatically. Once the exploit is performed another screen will pop-up showing a few options. Select “Install Cydia.” The process will continue automatically once again and your phone will reboot once it’s done.

Step 4: Remember that this is still not an untethered jailbreak. Because of this, you still need to boot tethered any time your phone reboots or loses power. To do this either hit “back” to the main screen if Redsn0w is still open or just reopen if it’s not and this time hit “Extras.”

Step 5: Now hit the “Just Boot” option.

Step 6: Now you will be instructed to put your device into DFU mode again. This time after your phone reboots, it will boot to the springboard and Cydia will be fully functioning just like an untethered jailbreak.

It’s here, folks! The Dev Team just updated its famous RedSn0w jailbreak tool to version 0.9.9 beta 8 in order to bring compatibility with iOS 5.0.1 beta, which was released yesterday for developers.

We told you yesterday that RedSn0w was already able to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 beta, but it wasn’t completely flawless, as you had to point RedSn0w to the iOS 5 IPSW. MuscleNerd just confirmed that he has added iOS 5.0.1 beta keys to RedSn0w 0.9.9b8, making the jailbreak process this much easier…

If you are an unlocker who runs an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 and want to update while preserving your baseband, the Mac version of RedSn0w 0.9.9b8 will allow you to do just that, but note that UltraSn0w may or may not work on iOS 5.0.1 beta as it hasn’t been updated yet, and probably won’t until 5.0.1 goes public.

redsn0w version 0.9.9b8 will natively recognize the 5.0.1 beta that Apple let developers start testing this week (so you don’t have to play the “point at 5.0 IPSW” trick). Because the IPSW isn’t public, you’ll still need to provide it once to redsn0w (at which point it will cache all the important pieces so you don’t need to select it again).

For those 3GS and i4 users who preserve their baseband, the Mac version can also produce the NO_BB_* custom IPSWs for 5.0.1. (But please note that ultrasn0w doesn’t get updated for betas like this.)

Of course, the jailbreak is still a tethered one unless you have an iPhone 3GS old bootrom, or run the semitether jailbreak app—and it will not work with the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.

To jailbreak your iDevice on iOS 5.0.1 follow the below steps:

Step 1: Download iOS 5.0.1 (developers) and ensure you have the public iOS 5.0 available as well. You download it here.

Step 2: Open RedSn0w 0.9.9b7 (download here) and select Extras > Specify Firmware > and point it to the iOS 5.0 firmware. It should identify the 5.0 firmware without error.

Step 3: Go back to the main screen of RedSn0w and place your device into DFU mode. Click Jailbreak, and then select Install Cydia.

Step 4: Your device should jailbreak, but your Cydia icon will be white due to it being a tethered jailbreak. Place your device back into DFU mode.

Step 5: Again, from RedSn0w’s main page, select Extras > Specify Firmware > and point it to the iOS 5.0 firmware. It should identify the 5.0 firmware without error.

Step 6: Select “Just Boot” from RedSn0w’s Extras menu, and it should perform a tethered boot on your device.

That’s it! you just jailbroke iOS 5.0.1.

Just a quick little heads up. MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-team has just announced on his Twitter the release of Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 for both Windows and Mac. But the question is what’s new on Redsn0w 0.9.9 b7 ?

MuscleNerd and iPhone Dev-team released Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 specially to improve the time of jailbreak process. Redsn0w 0.9.9 b7 reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (decreased by 60%). Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 still tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.

After some feedback on reddit, we’ve decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer “stashing” the applications by default during the redsn0w run. This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!). However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications. You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.

Thanks Dev-team for your continues improvement. But we do need iOS 5 untethered jailbreak.

iOS 5 can already be jailbroken thanks to the iPhone Dev Team’s quick release of a new version of redsn0w (0.9.9b4). This is currently a tethered jailbreak, but an untether is in progress.

Redsn0w will work to jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 CDMA & GSM, iPod touch 3rd & 4th gen, and iPad 1. Not supported yet are iPhone 4S and iPad 2 devices, due to their use of the A5 CPU.

Before getting started, download iOS 5 and update your hardware, keep the IPSW around, but also be sure to have updated to iTunes 10.5.

Download redsn0w 0.9.9b4

You will need redsn0w 0.9.9b4 to get started, download it now for Mac (v 0.9.9b5 here) or for Windows (direct download links)

Jailbreaking iOS 5

Launch Redsn0w and choose the “Jailbreak” button

Connect the iOS device to the computer and turn the hardware off

Enter DFU mode by holding down the Sleep/Power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the Power button but continue to hold the Home button for another 15 seconds. You will get a notification from Redsn0w informing you of the device being in DFU mode

Point redsn0w to your iOS 5 IPSW file (older version)

Redsn0w will now perform the jailbreak, the newest version does not require you to have to point to any IPSW files because it downloads them directly from Apple

Choose “Install Cydia” and proceed with the jailbreak

Now you need to boot the iOS device tethered to get Cydia to load:

Open redsn0w again

Click on “Extras” and select the iOS 5 IPSW you downloaded in the previous step

Back at the Extras menu, click on the “Just Boot” option and follow the on screen instructions to boot into the jailbroken device

Your iOS device will automatically reboot as jailbroken, you can confirm this by looking for the Cydia icon on your springboard. As previously stated, this is a tethered jailbreak so you will need to connect your iPhone, iPad, or ipod touch to a computer and boot it with the assistance of Redsn0w if the battery dies or you shut it down for another reason. This is easy to do, just launch Redsn0w again and choose “Just Boot” again from the Extras menu.

Over the last few months, we’ve seen several pre-release seeds of iOS 5 but no indication on when we’d finally see the final version, and without any surprise, today at their media event, Apple has seeded the final Gold Master candidate of iOS 5 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

After a mind boggling seven beta releases of iOS 5, Apple is finally done polishing iOS 5 to the point where it is ready for prime time consumption. iOS 5 Gold Master Candidate will likely indeed be the system’s final release unless any serious problems or bugs are found, which would require another GM candidate to be issued shortly after. Yet, Apple has a good track record of getting it right the first time, therefore we can say with some certitude that the seed issued today will likely indeed be the final version of iOS 5 before it goes final for the average Joe. Keeping in mind how Apple releases pre-release software, its safe to say that Apple will drop the final public version of iOS 5 in the next couple of weeks.

Keep in mind that this seed, much like previous beta builds of iOS 5, is only available to registered Apple developers for testing and won’t be downloadable through iTunes for regular users, as mentioned previously. While illegal copies of this seed will likely end up on all popular file sharing sites within hours, the only way to get iOS 5 GM legally is to obtain an Apple developer registration, which is available straight from Apple’s developer website for $99 per year. A developer registration with Apple is suitable for all of those who consider themselves iOS enthusiasts, since it provides many exclusive developer tools and documentation, as well as experimental iOS builds.

In order to be able to sync devices running iOS 5 Gold Master, however, you must first install the latest version of iTunes 10.5, which is also available from Apple’s developer site.

iOS 5, the next major release of the operating system that runs on iPhones, iPod touches and iPads was first announced at this year’s WWDC conference back in June. iOS 5 will be available to public on October 12th. Since this is the GM release, therefore expect it to be the full and final build which would be bug free, hence everyday users which are not enrolled in Apple’s developer program will have to wait to get their hands on it.
