This would come in handy, as an example, if you find yourself in a dead zone. It would be easier to track which area will allow you to make that important call. We’ve all been there, holding ours phones up like the Statue of Liberty trying to achieve a single bar.

I went ahead and dove into the steps on my iPhone 4. It does access a hidden area of your iphone so proceed with caution. What we do in the name of technology! Your iPhone does not need to be jailbroken and the process is simple.

I’m not sure if it works for all iPhone models or in all countries for that matter, but if you would like to see the results for yourself, here are the steps:

Step 1: Dial *3001#12345#* on your iPhone then press Call.

Step 2: You’ll now enter Field Test Mode. You’ll notice a signal strength indicator on the upper left hand corner of your screen. You can toggle between signal strength bars and a number by simply taping on it. At this point, press the home button to exit the app or if you would like the feature to be permanent, continue on. Don’t worry, the process is completely reversible.

Step 3: Hold down on the Power button until you see the ‘slide to power off’ bar. Do not power off the device.

Step 4: Press down on the Home button until the app closes and you return to your home screen.

That’s it. Even when restarting the iPhone, the signal strength can be toggled between bars and numbers. The closer your number is to zero, the stronger your signal is.

To return to the default bars permanently, follow these steps:

Step 1: Dial *3001#12345#* on your iPhone then press Call.

Step 2: Press on your Home Button once.

Early GSM-flavored iPhone 4S adopters may be happy to hear that Twitter user xoicos has found a way to unlock the new handset using a bug in iOS 5. Of course we know that Apple sells unlocked phones outright, but they are considerably more expensive.

Unlocking a device means that you are be able to activate it on other wireless carriers outside of the one you purchased the phone from. Initially, unlocking the iPhone required complexed baseband tweaking, but now it could be as easy as following these steps…

OSXDaily claims that several users have reported success with this unlock method, but it does warn readers to follow the guide at their own risk. We haven’t been able to confirm its safety or success either, so we are going to issue the same warning.

This tutorial describes how to unlock an AT&T iPhone 4S to work on T-Mobile’s network, so results with other carriers may vary. Obviously you’ll need a GSM iPhone 4S, and both an AT&T and T-Mobile SIM card (or one from a compatible GSM carrier).

“Step 1. Insert your AT&T SIM card. Dial 611 for customer service, and once it starts ringing, hang up.

Step 2. Turn on your iPhone’s Airplane mode, take out the AT&T SIM card, and replace it with a T-Mobile SIM.

Step 3. Make sure Wi-Fi is off, and clear any remembered networks to ensure it doesn’t auto-connect later.

Step 4. Turn off Airplane mode. The handset will search for a network, and the Activation Required screen will popup.

Step 5. Once you notice the device has found an EDGE network (E symbol), wait about 30 seconds and turn off the phone.

Step 6. Power the handset back on, and you should see the same Activation Required screen.

Step 7. Once you notice you have 1 bar of signal, tap on the Use Cellular Connection option. Then eject the SIM card.

Step 8. The Activation Required screen should pop up again. Re-insert the T-Mobile SIM card, and you should be unlocked.”

It’s worth noting that some users had to repeat this process multiple times for it to work. We’ll keep you updated on our findings once we can test this out for ourselves.

The genius word does not end on Apple’s innovations instead the real games starts after the actual release of the new product in the market. Apple releases iPhone 4S with Siri – voice assistant, the whole tech world got busy with the new play girl on their iPhone. The genius group of hackers appeared today with an amazing project called “Project Black Mirror” showing a method to control the iPhone 4S Siri with their mind commands. They have constructed an elaborate system involving the Adriano prototyping platform, a MacBook Pro, and ECG pads to capture analog brain waves. The hackers just command a Siri from their mind to make a call by thinking.

Well, you might be thinking that we are kidding, but we’re not! Their command’s route from the ECG pads to speech synthesizer chip, originally the hackers tries to make the whole process automate but the Apple’s iPhone 4S Siri activation bound them to press the home button of the device to activate the Siri. The real magic done there when the speech synthesizer gives a command to iPhone 4S Siri through the microphone jack.

The system successfully matches with the default commands of Siri like call (name), etc. The hackers just introduced another way of controlling Siri or the real tech virtual assistant. The speech synthesizer converts the hacker thoughts into audible words, and acts as an input command for Siri.

The video demonstrates a call being placed, but we wonder if this method can have Siri perform more complicated tasks, like creating an email or setting a location-based reminder. So many possibilities.

We knew it was going to come at some point during the month of November, but we didn’t know when Apple was going to officially start selling the unlocked iPhone 4S in the United States. Turns out, it was today.

With Apple already selling unlocked handsets on other countries, this is bringing the United States into line with everyone else. But if you’ve been waiting for the chance to buy an iPhone 4S without a 2-year contract, well, now you can!

All three capacities are available, along with both white and black models…

There is a price to pay for not being tied to a contract, and that’s a significant upfront cost. On Apple.com right now, the unlocked 16GB iPhone 4S will set you back $649. 32GB models weigh in at $749, with $849 required to pick up the top 64GB varient.

Apple also notes that the unlocked handsets will not work with CDMA carriers, meaning Sprint and Verizon in the United States.

“The unlocked iPhone includes all the features of iPhone but without a contract commitment. You can activate and use it on the supported GSM wireless network of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States.* The unlocked iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S will not work with CDMA-based carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.”

If unlocked is your preferred route, you’ll also need to wait 1-2 weeks for delivery, according to the Apple Store.

Siri on iPhone 4S comes up with many power features to enrich the user experience on the device, along with many powerful search engine features carries the “Raise To Speak” feature on iPhone 4S that allows Siri to launch on a device whenever “Raise To Speak” activated iPhone 4S raise to the user’s ear.
The raise to speak feature uses the couple of iPhone 4S features, such as the proximity sensors to sense the raising action of the device and to sense how close the user’s face is to the screen. Apple has already powered their iPhone with proximity sensors to sense the closeness of a screen to the user’s skin in order to turn off the device display and touch to prevent accidental input while on phone calls.

However,it appears the new Siri “Raise To Speak” feature requires the proximity sensors to work all the time and silently allow them to eat all the battery of the device. Similar to “Setting Time Zone” bug of iOS 5. In addition to it, the infamous Teardown specialist firm named “iFixit” comes up with a report showing how the new iPhone 4S proximity sensors involved in emitting infrared lights to detect the user’s skin for Siri’s new Raise To Speak feature. During our iPhone 4S teardown, iFixit buddy Markus noted that the new iPhone had a rather unusual-looking black component next to the ambient light sensor. We didn’t make much of a fuss about it since we were knee-deep in disassembly pictures, but the little black box certainly piqued our curiosity.

Now that the teardown is wrapped up, we’ve re-opened the mystery and made a neat discovery about the 4S: that black component is an infrared LED, and the little bugger almost always wants to know if you’re nearby. iFixit folks have demoed a video showing comparison between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S proximity sensors wwork. Thefirm highlights how iPhone 4 sensor activate when the user on pa phone call, and how the iPhone 4S new proximity work all the time to support the new iPhone 4S Siri’s “Raise to Speak” feature.

As Apple has announced that they are expanding iPhone 4S sales range to Hong Kong, South Korea, and 14 other countries this week, it appears that company has got a really amazing response from the Apple’s gadget lovers. It is reported that Apple sells out iPhone 4S reservation quota within first 10 minutes. Apple has opened iPhone 4S pre-orders in China, the land where they already have good grip.

The sales of iPhone 4S in China broke out the recent rapid selling record of Apple in US and UK, it actually happens when iPhone 4S Siri even does not supports the China. Apple has planned to roll out China version of Siri in 2012. The analyst of Ticonderoga Securities, Brain White, also explains the amazing growing demand of Apple’s smartphones in China.

In a note sent out to company investors on Monday, White said:

“In our view, this is a very positive sign for iPhone 4S demand in Greater China has Hong Kong represents the first entry of the new smartphone in the rapidly growing region, and we expect the 4S to reach Mainland China in December,”

“We believe this rapid sell out will rest concerns surrounding the uptake of the iPhone 4S in the Greater China region that were driven by the limited language capability of Siri, which did not launch in Mandarin or Cantonese.”

iPhone 4S Siri is one of the main feature of the new device that has interact users towards the device, but it is worth note here that Siri service is currently in beta, and only supports the US, UK and Australian English. Apple has also announced that they will expand Siri services to some more languages, including Chinese and Japanese but in 2012. iPhone 4S Siri only works perfect for those users who live in U.S or U.K because Siri location based services only support these areas.

As someone who has been lucky enough to spend the last few months testing iOS 5 in various beta stages, it has to be said that the version we’re all currently enjoying has come a long way since the early days.

When Apple released the iOS 5 GM not that long ago, I instantly noticed that my iPhone 4′s battery life was lasting roughly half of what it was before. A coincidence, I thought. It’ll sort itself out, I presumed. After getting the iPhone 4S, the problem persisted. Twitter and forums on the web over lit up with similar problems, and a few fixes were suggested, mostly to no avail.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel. Switching one little toggle in iOS 5′s Settings app may hold the key to curing your iPhone 4S battery…

Head over to Settings, then Location Services, and finally System Services. Right at the bottom you’ll find a toggle switch for “Status Bar Icon.” Switch that on, and watch to see if your location icon pops up in the status bar. If it does, we might be on to something. If not, well, follow the rest of the guide just in case.

The second part of the test requires you to now switch off ”Setting Time Zone.” Did the icon disappear? I’m betting it did, and if that’s the case, you’re in luck.

See, it appears that iOS 5′s GM release introduced a bug that causes the Setting Time Zone function to keep the location tracking circuitry running constantly, draining battery power considerably. Switching it off may mean that your iPhone will no longer set its own time zone when you travel, but that’s a small price to pay for having your iPhone last more than 12 hours on a full charge.

Leave the rest of the location settings on. There’s no need to cripple such essential functionality, and it appears that the Setting Time Zone option is the one that causes the hit on battery life.

We have tested this method on 4 different iPhone 4s handsets, including an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS. All have reported drastically improved battery life after switching “Setting Time Zone” off.

Interestingly, there appears to be no rhyme or reason as to why some handsets seem to have the issue, with not all iOS 5 installations apparently causing the bug to manifest itself in the same way. As I said earlier, it’s still worth switching the setting off just in case, and we’ve had one or two reports of it making a considerable difference, regardless.

So what kind of difference are we talking about? The screenshots below, taken using my own iPhone 4S before and after the change, tell their own story.

We’ve had very similar stories from other people around the globe as well.

Give this a try yourself and let us know the results. If this doesn’t work, you can always read our <a title="iOS 5 Battery Life Worse?

Ever since Apple unveiled its latest version of the iPhone earlier this month, we’ve all been wondering one thing — when would it be jailbroken? And now that some of us have had the device for two weeks, we’re definitely ready to start hacking.

Tweaks are being updated with iOS 5 compatibility, and new utilities are being introduced that are specific to the new software. So how long must us iPhone 4S users wait until we can access this stuff? Luckily, MuscleNerd has some info for us…

The Dev Team frontman gave up some details on his Twitter account late last night regarding the status of the iPhone 4S jailbreak. The good news is, the Team has managed to exploit Apple’s latest smartphone and install Cydia.

The bad news is, that seems to be as far as they’ve gotten. MuscleNerd posted this message, “VERY preliminary 4S JB. (Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left),” along with these screenshots:

Keep in mind that we saw Comex‘s jailbroken iPad 2 months before a public release was available, so the hard part is yet to come. But it’s still good to see that the device has been jailbroken. These guys have once again proved how talented they are.
