Apple Geniuses to Begin Using iPads Instead of MacBook Pros

If there was ever any doubt about just how seriously Apple is taking the transition from the ‘trucks’ of the old generation, MacBooks and Macs, to the new generation of touch-enabled iOS devices, then this should end it. According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple is planning to change the way it operates its Genius Bar, by incorporating the iPad into its workflow.

Currently, Apple’s staff use MacBook Pros to help diagnose issues and then work to rectify them, but it would appear that the company will now begin using iPads running custom software.

The change sees Apple replace its own premium notebooks with tablets, offering increased portability to the technical customer service process…

Apple’s MacBook Pros currently run a piece of software called GCRM, and it is expected that the new iPad system will also run a similar piece of software allowing Geniuses to check the current warranty state for Apple products, check them in for repair, and check the entire history of Apple products using their unique serial number.

One of the advantages of moving from MacBook Pros to iPads is the increased portability offered by the tablets. Currently, Geniuses are tethered to the Genius Bar, often creating a bottleneck for customer traffic. With an iPad in tow, staff will be able to move around the store, offering help anywhere without the need to be behind a desk.

Anything that makes the customer flow in Apple Stores a more pleasurable experience gets our vote, and Apple is showing great faith in its iPad with this move.

If Apple isn’t going to be using its own notebooks anymore, it may just show where the company’s priorities lie moving forward.

It’s crazy what a thousand dollars worth of iPads, a Wi-FI connection, and a little bit of creativity can do. In this case, it can help create one of the best Halloween costumes we’ve seen yet.

The idea is to create a gaping hole in the torso using two iPads, one taped iPad on the front, and one taped on the back, then start a FaceTime conversation between them. The result is quite cool…

I don’t know if I’d feel comfortable going out with my iPads taped on my body, but maybe I’m just not enough of a daredevil.

MuscleNerd Gives Update on iPhone 4S Jailbreak Status

Ever since Apple unveiled its latest version of the iPhone earlier this month, we’ve all been wondering one thing — when would it be jailbroken? And now that some of us have had the device for two weeks, we’re definitely ready to start hacking.

Tweaks are being updated with iOS 5 compatibility, and new utilities are being introduced that are specific to the new software. So how long must us iPhone 4S users wait until we can access this stuff? Luckily, MuscleNerd has some info for us…

The Dev Team frontman gave up some details on his Twitter account late last night regarding the status of the iPhone 4S jailbreak. The good news is, the Team has managed to exploit Apple’s latest smartphone and install Cydia.

The bad news is, that seems to be as far as they’ve gotten. MuscleNerd posted this message, “VERY preliminary 4S JB. (Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left),” along with these screenshots:

Keep in mind that we saw Comex‘s jailbroken iPad 2 months before a public release was available, so the hard part is yet to come. But it’s still good to see that the device has been jailbroken. These guys have once again proved how talented they are.

iPhone Dev Team Demoed iPad 2 Jailbreak On iOS 5

It appears that iPhone Dev team has posted the couple of evidence regarding the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreaks on iOS 5. Earlier today they have published few screenshots of iPhone 4S running Cydia and noted that the jailbreak is in very preliminary stage, MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team noted that jailbreak still requires a lot of work.
After publishing the pictures of iPhone 4S running a Cydia on iOS 5, it is reported that iPhone Dev Team also uploaded a video to their Youtube channel, demoing the iPad 2 running a Cydia on iOS 5. Similarly, to the iPhone 4S, the team also mentioned in the description that iPad 2 jailbreaks on iOS 5 is also in the preliminary stage and requires a lot of work to be done.

Currently, the iPad 2 can be only jailbreak through using the Web based jailbreak named JailbreakMe 3.0 by Comex. However, the iPad 2 jailbreak do not support the new iOS 5 firmware, and requires a complete new jailbreak for the new version.

iPad 2 Smart Cover Security Flaw Discovered

Along with its products, Apple is well known for its trendy accessories. With the original iPad, there were the foldable iPad cases. And with the iPhone 4, there were bumpers. Now, with the iPad 2, we have Smart Covers.

The Cupertino company seemingly hit a home run with its magnetic snap-on covers for its latest tablet. But 9to5Mac is reporting that the accessory that was designed to protect the iPad 2 might also be harming it as well…

According to the report, anyone with a Smart Cover can break into your iPad 2, even if it’s password-protected. The flaw seems to be with iOS 5, but the site has been told that it’s also present in iOS 4.3. Watch this video of the exploit in action:

Although the security flaw wouldn’t give someone access to all of iOS, it would spell trouble if someone were to leave an app like Messages or Safari open. Expect to see Apple fix this in iOS 5.0.1. Until then, you might want to be extra careful with your tablet.
